About Brian Allen
Brian Allen received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in painting from Kent State University and a BFA in graphic design from the University of Akron. In 2013 he moved from Cuyahoga Falls, OH to Salt Lake City.
Brian is a painter of paradox - he uses art as a conduit to merge conflicting emotions. Feelings of tension and tranquility are evoked, by blurring the line between the chaotic and serene. His works represent the multi-faceted complexities of everyday life. Brian's interest in the convergence of polar opposites began in art school. His inspiration was psychological androgyny and how it's proven to be cognitively and sociologically beneficial. He found that he could create something entirely new and unexpected by combining dichotomous subjects. Brian's work has since evolved into pure abstract form. His work still maintains the underlying principal of paradoxical emotions, commonly associated with femininity and masculinity.
The concept of paradox in emotion is integral to the process. Brian builds the foundation of his paintings through a technique that toggles between cathartic movements of free flowing curves and sharp lines. The elaborate marks of movement act as a vehicle in completing the piece. Brian uses them as a starting point in the final steps of the painting, by expanding some while editing others. These more prominent components accentuate and build upon the initial paradoxical approach, furthering the harmonious medley of both ease and aggression. The question then remains, how would embracing or further developing contrasting aspects of our own personalities make us more socially and cognitively adept?
